11/1/2001 - Dr. Alan W. Brown Selected To Participate In New Form Of Cataract Surgery
Dr. Alan W. Brown, an ophthalmologist at Brunswick Community Hospital, has been selected as one of twenty ophthalmologists throughout the United States to participate in a new form of cataract surgery known as Sonolase Phacoemulsification.
When the natural lens of the eye becomes cloudy, the lens is referred to as a cataract. Cataracts are traditionally removed through ultrasonic energy in a procedure called phacoemulsification.
Sonolase is a new form of phacoemulsification, which changes the pattern of the ultrasonic energy to prevent heating of delicate eye tissues.
"The new form of ultrasound energy found in Sonolase allows me to perform cataract surgery in a manner that has never before been possible," said Dr. Brown. "My experience with this new instrument software has shown me that, as advanced as cataract surgery is, it will become even more advanced and safer with this new technology."
The first Sonolase instrument in the area was placed at the Brunswick Community Hospital.
